Student Process

 

 

Note to students, make sure you write down each and every website, print source, etc. while completing the following tasks.  You will need this information for your bibliography.

Task #1: Using the Internet

Part A:

  1. Don't close this window so it is there for you to follow the directions.
  2. On the desktop, click on MeL, Michigan Electronic Library
  3. Once there, click on MeL databases from the library
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the database page, select Wilson Select Plus
  5. Do a search for Toni Morrison
  6. How many articles did you find?  RECORD THAT NUMBER  What is the most recent date of an article?  RECORD THAT DATE
  7. Choose one article of your choice from that search and view it in HTML format.  PRINT THE ARTICLE IN THIS VIEW
 

Part B:

  1. Open up a new tab in your browser without closing Wilson Select Plus
  2. Do the same search using or Google for Toni Morrison
  3. How many websites did you find? RECORD THAT NUMBER

Part C:

  1. Back to the desktop, open nettrekker
  2. Click on the high school's name to enter
  3. Do the same search here for Toni Morrison
  4. How many websites did you find? RECORD THAT NUMBER
  5. Now do an image search for Toni Morrison.  Are there any images there of her?  How many?
  6. In the right hand column, there is a search feature for references, click on that
  7. Try three links from this page.  Which references did you find to be the most useful?
 

Which search is the better search?  Why is it the better search?  What things do you notice is different between the database search and the Yahoo! or Google search?

Part D:

  1. From the desktop, click on the card catalog
  2. Complete a search for Toni Morrison
  3. How many books are in the media center on this topic?  What other resources can you find about that topic?

Part E:

  1. Go to http://www.webwisekids.org/ and click on the For Teens section
  2. Take the "Know it All?" Challenge
  3. How did you score?  Name five things that you learned about yourself and the Internet.  How are you going to change to make sure you're safe online?
  4. Go back to the For Teens section and click on Internet Safety Plan.  Download and print the plan.  Take this form home, fill it out, sign it, have your parents sign it, and submit a copy with your final brochure.

Part F:

  1. Go to http://www.copyrightkids.org/
  2. Take the Copyright Challenge: A Quiz
  3. How did you do?  Print your certificate
  4. Include your results in your brochure.

Part G:

  1. TRAILS assessment.  Type in this URL: www.trails9.org/session/... (see Mrs. Roesch for the number codes)
  2. Complete the user information to get started
  3. Complete the TRAILS assessment and print results to submit to Mrs. Roesch
  4. How did you do?  Do you know more now than you did before.

Task #2: Creating the Bibliography

Now, since you have been keeping track of your sources while completing task 1, create your bibliography.

  1. Go to www.citationmachine.net
  2. Click on MLA in the left column
  3. Choose the source you need to document and fill in the blanks
  4. Click submit
  5. From the gray box, highlight, copy, and paste the citation information into a Word document
  6. Repeat these steps for all of your sources
  7. Once all of the sources have been placed into the Word document, you will need to format the page as follows:  place entries in alphabetical order by author's last name, size 12, Double spaced, Times New Roman, 1" margins, tab the second and any subsequent lines in each single entry.  Make sure to check you spelling.
